TRUSTMIND Lundbeck Foundation, PI · 2025–2030

AI in Mental Health – Ensuring Evaluation, Trustworthiness, and Ethical Considerations.

A 5-year, 20,000,000 DKK project developing AI algorithms for screening Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) using diverse datasets, guided by ethical and legal principles and supported by interdisciplinary expertise in neuroscience, AI, medicine, ethics and law. Starting in spring 2025, the project puts recent developments in AI to the test in a setting as close as possible to the real world – an academic exercise before implementing AI solutions in the Danish healthcare system, showing how AI can be implemented in healthcare while also helping to discover pitfalls and where the legal and ethical boundaries lie.

With Co-PIs Aasa Feragen and Merete Osler, and collaborators Sune Holm and Katharina Ó Cathaoir. An advisory board of Vibe Frøkjær, Martin Balslev Jørgensen and Thomas Hildebrandt provides guidance and feedback.

Where it came from

TRUSTMIND grew out of, and overlapped with, the Lundbeck Experiment pilot project ("Measuring the reliability of trustworthy healthcare AI for mental health risk prediction"), which itself followed on from the earlier Bias and Fairness in Medicine project (2020–2023). That project helped kick-start FAIMI – Fairness of AI in Medical Imaging, now an official MICCAI Special Interest Group.
